What caribbean island has the most interesting, budding new music scene?
I am interested in visiting an island with potential for good new music from young artists like myself– what’s the best caribbean island to go to for inspiration or to find like-minded individuals who are ambitious with their career yet still have an island mindset?
Ideally, a beautiful, safe, peaceful place with rich scenery, but also with a substantial audience, ie large number of people passing through and a good modern city area.
Btw half of my family is Jamaican, so I am looking for options outside of there, as I already am familiar with the music happening there…
Thank you all in advance,
G
Appart form Jamaica, the only other real options are:
1) Trinidad and Tobago
Has lots of people (bigger cities)
Has an interesting blend of music. calypso, soca, chutney, parang, rapso and even the reggae types. There are a few people experimenting as well.
Also intersting musical instruments like the steel pan.
3) Barbados
This is an intersting place but the music is limited to soca, calypso and reggae.
I think Trinidad and Tobago is the better place for you.
Google it up an see for yourself.

Well the Reggaeton scene in Puerto Rico just blew up really big. It is mainly artists from Puerto Rico (although it started in Panama) but the music is very big now all through the caribbean & latin america & the US & Europe. The music is mostly spanish but some english. Its a mix of Reggae, hiphop & latin music (like salsa). Im sure each sland has their own music scene, but other than Reggae in Jamaica- Reggaeton is the 1 doing the best right now.
San Juan, PR is a major modernized city. PR is part of the US, so there are US standards & its relatively safe & people do relatively well in comparison w/ other islands. There are over a million people living in the San Juan metro area. Goodlk with whatever you choose
